Tōhoku's Michinoku Coastal Trail

Running up the craggy Tōhoku coast for over 1,000 kilometres is the Michinoku Coastal Trail. It winds through four prefectures along dramatic rocky cliffs and coastal inlets, pristine pine and beech forests, and cosy seaside villages. The weather here is cooler than the rest of the Japanese mainland, and the Pacific Ocean stretches dramatically towards the east as crashing waves and the cries of sea birds lend an atmosphere to your walk.

On 11th March 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake led to a massive tsunami that devastated the Tōhoku region. Damage was widespread, and hundreds of thousands of people were killed, injured, or displaced. The financial and human tolls were severe, and rebuilding continues to this day.

In the decade-plus since, locals have banded together to rebuild, both structurally and spiritually. This progress is a testament to the resilience and pride of the people living in this region, which has been settled for centuries. Built on a strong foundation of mutual support, the culture here stresses reciprocity and kindness.

Originally several different trails that were connected through cooperation with the Tōhoku regional government and local areas, the Michinoku Coastal Trail opened in 2019 as part of a revitalisation effort for the area. However, it is also meant to serve as a bridge: one between locals and visitors, and between the communities that make Tōhoku their home. The paved roads and forest trails tie together a region that has joined to rebuild in the wake of calamity.

We have partnered with the Michinoku Trail Club, a non-profit organisation which works to maintain and promote the trail and provide hikers with support and information, to create our Michinoku Coastal Trail guided and self-guided tours. Our work with the MTC, members of the local community, and local agencies has allowed us to create tours that connect our guests with the people at the heart of the region.

Our collection of Michinoku Coastal Trail tours focuses on the northern and central sections of the trail, known as the Sanriku Coast. All feature curated hikes through some of the most intriguing sections of the Michinoku, stays in small, locally-run guesthouses, and meals featuring fresh seafood throughout your tour.

Which tour is right for me?
First, consider whether you prefer to travel independently or together with a small group of like-minded travellers. If it’s the latter, then our Guided Tour is the best option for you; if you prefer independent adventure, then our Self-guided tours, which provide you with our Walking Guidebook and Area Maps, may be your ideal choice.

We recommend this for travellers who enjoy group hikes, or for those who wish to dive deep into the background of and connect to the area and its people.

Self-Guided Tour – Rugged Rias of the Michinoku
An either 5- or 6-day self-guided tour through the central portion of the Michinoku, characterised by its ria coastline and its remoteness. This is for the traveller who wishes to continue their Michinoku journey, prefers to travel in a region few have seen, or prefers to challenge themselves in more rugged, less-populated areas. We recommend this for more seasoned hikers or who have already seen the northern part of the Michinoku.
